Skyway Marina District

Glen Welden • April 5, 2022

"The Skyway Marina District has great potential for development and growth with unique amenities, location, and community. Through proper planning the District can become a commercial hub that can compete with neighboring areas. Thomas Signs was able to help us capture that through their incredible design and ability to work in a multifaceted environment."

The Scope Of The Project

  • Create a vision for the Skyway Marina District
  • Show ways in which to implement that vision
  • Show the potential for development and growth with unique amenities, location, and community
  • Durable and vibrant design

The Steps Taken

  • Interviewed stakeholders including board members and community leaders.
  • Working with the City of Saint Petersburg, reviewed project plans and conceptual materials
  • Drew preliminary sketches for review
  • Developed draft designs for manufacturing and engineering review
  • Created final revisions for review and authorization.
  • Project Manage / Site Coordination

What We Accomplished

As Director of Design for Thomas Sign & Awning, Clearwater Florida, I was tasked to create a series of design conceptuals for the Gateway Entrances into the Skyway Marina District, Saint Petersburg Florida. This was a design competition that was organized by the Skyway Marina District Chair and Board of Directors, in conjunction with the City of Saint Petersburg.  The competition was based on creativity, vision and the ability to design within budget. The display specifications included exterior and interior lighting. Thomas Sign won the competition and was awarded the contract based on one of the design submittals. The outstanding Team at Thomas did a fantastic job of taking the "vision" and creating a reality that stands today as sharp as it did when it was installed in 2015.
